Programme Thesis
PharmStars is a paid, for-equity accelerator that exists to bridge the 'pharma-startup gap' — it selects 10 digital health startups per cohort, educates them on pharma's internal culture and deal structures (PharmaU curriculum), then showcases them to member pharma/biotech companies seeking vetted digital partnerships. The Fall 2026 cohort theme is 'Digital Innovations in Immunology.' In exchange for completing the 10-week program, each startup receives a $100K SAFE investment (Y-Combinator Discount/No-Cap structure, 20–30% dynamic discount) from the PharmStars Ventures Fund; startups pay $35,000 tuition (offsettable against the SAFE).
Selection Criteria
• FIT (primary): Does the startup's product address immunological disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, or patient care? Sub-themes: biomarker development, irAE monitoring, personalized immunotherapy, clinical trial tools for immunology, patient adherence/engagement for chronic immune conditions
• PRODUCT STAGE (hard filter): Must have a working prototype or market-ready product that pharma can adopt immediately — 'idea-stage' is insufficient
• PHARMA ENGAGEMENT NEED: Startup should NOT yet have broad pharma client relationships — programme targets companies that need the introduction and education to land pharma deals
• TEAM STRUCTURE (hard filter): Must have at least 2 full-time employees (not contractors) with contract-signing authority; CEO + 1–2 senior team members expected
• LEGAL ELIGIBILITY: Only startups from countries where SAFEs are legal can participate; Nigerian SAFE legality is uncertain and must be confirmed
• GEOGRAPHY: Any country; but in-person attendance at Boston Launch Event (Sep 9–10) and Startup Showcase (mid-Nov) is required
• FINANCIALS: $500 participation deposit at semi-finalist stage; $6,000 tuition deposit upon acceptance; $35K total tuition (can be net-settled against $100K SAFE)
• COMPETITIVENESS: <16% acceptance rate historically; 10 slots from a global field — recent cohorts drew 16–19 countries
Past Winners / Cohort Profiles
PharmStars has graduated 100+ startups across 10 cohorts. Fall 2025 cohort (theme: 'Data Management and Insights'): 11 companies from 19 countries — Ailin Health (Madrid, Spain; out-of-clinic screening), CROMODATA (Buenos Aires; LatAm RWE data), DataJoint (Houston; R&D multimodal platform), Ethos (Redwood City; adaptive learning/LMS), Infermedica (Wroclaw; pre-diagnostic patient guidance), Medwise AI (Leeds; GenAI HCP engagement), OmniScience (Houston; clinical trial AI), Reflector Bio (New York; AI drug discovery), ROOK (Miami; wearable data integration), Superbio.ai (Palo Alto; 650+ AI drug discovery tools), WHYZE Health (Dublin; real-world clinical data). Spring 2023 theme was 'Women's Health or Health Equity.' Archetype across cohorts: early-to-growth-stage digital health companies with a working SaaS/AI product, a named CEO leading the application, a team of 2–4 people with business model clarity, and a clear thesis for why pharma is the target client — not academic or individual researcher profiles.
Ideal Candidate Fingerprint
A 2–5 person digital health startup with a working AI/software product touching immunological disease (autoimmune, oncology immunotherapy, allergy, irAE monitoring, vaccine adherence, etc.), founded by a CEO with domain expertise in pharma/clinical, having raised a pre-seed or seed round, seeking pharma as their primary commercial channel rather than direct-to-patient. The startup has not yet cracked pharma BD — they know their product works but struggle to navigate pharma's internal structures, procurement timelines, and deal structures. They are willing to pay $35K in tuition and accept SAFE equity terms in exchange for warm introductions to pharma member companies and structured education in pharma business culture.
Recommended Framing
Eniola's most defensible angle — if applying — would be to reframe TOPOLOGIX as an early-stage immunology drug-protein interaction startup: TDA-based persistent homology applied to immunological drug targets (e.g. checkpoint inhibitors, CAR-T antigen mapping, antibody–epitope binding topology) could credibly slot under the 'Novel Development of New Immunological Therapies' and 'Enhancing Immunology Drug Development and Safety' sub-themes. She would need to position herself as the founding CEO of TOPOLOGIX (not as an independent researcher), articulate a pharma-ready prototype that immunology drug developers could license today, and recruit a co-founder or technical co-lead to satisfy the 2-representative minimum. The CCT model's Bayesian clinical trial architecture (preprint 3) could be framed as supporting immunotherapy adherence or irAE prediction as a secondary angle, though the stretch is visible to reviewers.
Watch Out
CRITICAL — STRUCTURAL MISMATCH: PharmStars explicitly funds startups (incorporated companies), not individual researchers. Eniola's current profile is an independent researcher/sole author, not a startup CEO with a team. The programme hard-requires at least 2 full-time employees (not contractors) with contract-signing authority — she does not currently have a co-founder or team satisfying this.
CRITICAL — SAFE LEGALITY IN NIGERIA: The terms state 'only startups from countries in which SAFEs are legal will be accepted.' SAFE agreements are not standard legal instruments in Nigeria, and their enforceability is untested — this may be a disqualifying eligibility issue requiring legal confirmation before applying.
SERIOUS — TUITION COST: $35,000 USD is required (with $6,000 deposit on acceptance). While netted against the $100K SAFE, tuition must be committed before investment is received — a significant financial barrier for a Lagos-based independent researcher.
SERIOUS — BOSTON IN-PERSON: In-person attendance at both the September 9–10 Launch Event (Boston) and mid-November Startup Showcase (Boston) is mandatory — requires US visa + international travel costs for a Nigerian national.
SERIOUS — THEME MISMATCH: None of her three primary platforms (IMPRINT = addiction screening; TOPOLOGIX = hERG cardiotoxicity/drug-protein TDA; GATE = BCI safety) are immunology-focused. A pivot will read as opportunistic to reviewers who have read 19 countries' worth of applications.
MODERATE — NOT PHARMA-SALES-READY: PharmStars targets startups seeking pharma as paying clients — it is a commercial BD accelerator, not a research fellowship. Eniola's current output is preprints and computational models, not a software product under evaluation by pharma procurement.
MODERATE — APPLICATION TIMING: Deadline is July 12, 2026 — two days from today. Insufficient time for strategic repositioning, entity formation, or team recruitment.
