The Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF) is a fully-funded, week-long networking conference — not a research grant — that annually selects 200 outstanding young researchers in mathematics and computer science to interact intensively and informally with recipients of the Abel Prize, Fields Medal, ACM Turing Award, ACM Prize in Computing, IMU Abacus Medal, and Nevanlinna Prize. • ELIGIBILITY (hard gates): Must be currently enrolled at one of three levels — (1) Undergraduate/Pre-Master: enrolled in Bachelor's or Master's, no Master's degree held yet; (2) Graduate PhD: enrolled and working toward a PhD; (3) Postdoc: PhD earned within the past 5 years. Independent/unaffiliated researchers are NOT eligible. Discipline must be mathematics, computer science, or 'closely related fields.' Participation is permitted only once per academic level. • DISCIPLINE QUOTA: 100 spots for mathematics (reviewed by IMU / DNVA panel) and 100 for computer science (reviewed by ACM panel). Applicants must apply under one track. Reviewers are pure math/CS experts — not interdisciplinary or life-science reviewers. • REVIEW PROCESS: Every complete application is scored by at least 3 independent reviewers appointed by ACM, IMU, or DNVA. The average score is computed; the top 100 per discipline are invited. There is no quota by country or institution. • REQUIRED MATERIALS: (a) CV; (b) Motivational statement (interest in mathematics/CS and why HLF specifically); (c) One recommendation letter submitted directly by a professor or supervisor (not uploaded by applicant); (d) Awards and scientific achievements (if any). Graduate PhD and Postdoc applicants additionally require: thesis topic summary, transcripts, and publication list. • SCORING PRIORITIES (inferred from reviewer composition and past cohort profiles): Quality and originality of documented research output; clarity and sophistication of the motivational statement; strength and specificity of the recommendation letter; trajectory and ambition relative to career stage; geographic and institutional diversity is a secondary factor but not an explicit criterion. • LANGUAGE: All documents must be in English; diplomas require both original and certified English translation.
The HLF has consistently accepted participants from all academic levels, including undergraduates.
