Programme Thesis
Emergent Ventures (EV) is Tyler Cowen's personal grant and fellowship programme at the Mercatus Center, GMU, launched 2018. It funds 'zero to one' moonshots — ideas that could materially advance prosperity, opportunity, liberty, or wellbeing — at any scale, from a few hundred dollars to $50K+. It exists because Cowen believes traditional philanthropy is too slow, credential-obsessed, and risk-averse; EV deliberately inverts that by having one decision-maker, no thematic restrictions, a 1,500-word application, and decisions typically within one week. There is a dedicated sub-track, EV Africa & Caribbean, managed by Rasheed Griffith, which has run six cohorts and funded Nigerian researchers including a microbiologist visiting Waterloo, a Naija Coder CS summer programme, and a development podcast.
Selection Criteria
• Minimum age 13; no maximum; no academic or institutional requirement
• Rolling applications — no deadline
• Primary criterion: 'zero to one' potential — is this idea genuinely novel, scalable, and high-impact?
• Cowen prizes unconventional backgrounds and contrarian thinkers; institutional prestige is irrelevant
• 'A quick path to revenue self-sufficiency is a feature, not a bug' — commercial viability is valued
• All geographies eligible; dedicated Africa/Caribbean sub-track exists (apply via same form, select Africa under 'Affected Region')
• Application has three mandatory sections: (1) personal story — authenticity and ambition trajectory over credentials; (2) one mainstream view you agree with — tests depth of thinking and rejects reflexive contrarianism; (3) project pitch — novelty, problem, what is new in your vision
• Budget optional (ballpark only; not binding)
• Supplementary docs allowed (doc/docx/images/xls ONLY — no PDFs); multimedia URL allowed (video or demo)
• Tyler personally reviews every application; may follow up with questions before deciding
• Past recipients include teenage scientists, independent researchers, journalists, founders — archetype diversity is intentional

EV winners span an extraordinary range: teenage piano virtuosos, 16-year-olds working on space debris, independent physics/biology researchers, investigative journalists, podcast hosts, and computational biology PhD candidates. In the Africa/Caribbean sub-track: Caroline Ochieng (Kenya, molecular virology PhD), John Anthony Francois (St. Lucia/Stanford, Immune Checkpoint Blockade research), Rupert Tawiah-Quashie (Ghana, Harvard AI symbolic reasoning internship), Emmanuel Nnadi (Nigeria, microbiologist visiting Waterloo for phage therapy), Joshua Payne (U Chicago, mRNA vaccine optimisation), Daniel Alabi (Nigeria/Columbia postdoc, Naija Coder programme). Global cohorts include computational biology students at MIT/Stanford/Berkeley, independent founders, writers, and researchers at various career stages — the unifying thread is ambition and a compelling idea, not institutional pedigree. Grant amounts range from a few thousand dollars (career support, travel) to $30K–$50K+ for substantive research or platform development.
Ideal Candidate Fingerprint
The platonic ideal Emergent Ventures applicant is someone whose trajectory could not have been predicted by their CV alone: a person doing genuinely original work from an unexpected vantage point, who would be systematically overlooked by normal academic or philanthropic channels, and who has already demonstrated they can build or produce without institutional scaffolding. They apply with a clear idea of what a grant would unlock that self-funding or conventional support cannot, and they tell that story with intellectual confidence rather than credential-listing. The Africa/Caribbean sub-track particularly prizes early-career STEM researchers from the continent who are punching above their weight.
Recommended Framing
Eniola should apply to the EV Africa & Caribbean track (selecting 'Africa' in the Affected Region field) with the CCT model framed as the centrepiece of a canonical talent-unlocking story: a sole-authored tripartite pharmacological framework for addiction prevention, computationally validated from Lagos with no institutional backing, that has already attracted public endorsements from Berridge (Michigan), Gershman (Harvard), Daw (Princeton), and Mattar (NYU) — four of the top labs in reward neuroscience. The personal story section should trace the arc from clinical pharmacy in Nigeria to independent computational neuroscience, emphasising how the lack of institutional access forced a more rigorous, first-principles approach. For the 'mainstream view' question, she should answer something like 'addiction is fundamentally a disorder of memory encoding, not just reward' — stating the NIDA/neuroscience consensus position that she then extends rather than overturns, showing she understands the field deeply enough to know what is settled versus what her model adds. The pitch should ask for a concrete, small-to-mid ask (e.g. $15K–$25K) tied to a specific next step: compute time for full Bayesian MCMC parameter sweep, travel to present at a US neuroscience conference to accelerate collaborator relationships, or seed funding for IMPRINT's clinical validation pilot — framing the grant as the bridge between three preprints and a provisionally patented architecture already drawing elite endorsements, and a first wet-lab or clinical partnership.
Watch Out
• No PDFs accepted as supplementary documents — Eniola cannot attach her OSF/Zenodo preprints directly; she must include hyperlinks to them in the proposal body and may upload a one-page overview as a .docx
• The 'path to revenue' emphasis may require she explicitly name IMPRINT and TOPOLOGIX as commercialisation pathways and mention the provisional patent, lest the application read as pure academic research with no self-sufficiency route
• Grant amounts in the Africa track have often been smaller (career support, travel, research visits) rather than large research grants; she should calibrate her ask to a specific, deliverable milestone rather than 'fund my research programme'
• Tyler Cowen will notice immediately if the personal story leans on credentials rather than narrative arc — the instruction literally says 'we probably don't care much about your formal education'; the B.Pharm, PCN license, and CGPA should be mentioned only as context, not as proof of quality
• Competition is global and fast-moving; a weak 'mainstream view' answer (something genuinely contrarian rather than a surprising consensus agreement) would be disqualifying — the question is a deliberate trap
