MOTIVATION LETTER The Aims Research and Innovation Centre at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences exists to support computational research across Africa. I have spent the last two years building and maintaining the exact kind of infrastructure that makes that research possible, and I want to put those skills to work for AIMS. I am a licensed pharmacist and computational researcher currently enrolled in the M.Sc. Digital Health programme at the Hasso Plattner Institute / University of Potsdam. My research spans addiction neuroscience, protein machine learning, and dynamical systems, but the thread running through all of it is that I build and operate the systems that produce the science. I run four independent DuckDB-based data pipelines for corpus ingestion and retrieval across life sciences, technology, and social science domains. I self-host local LLM serving with llama.cpp, including on-demand model swapping, on Linux VPS infrastructure I manage end to end with systemd, Caddy TLS, CI/CD, and automated backup and disaster recovery. I have deployed and maintained Nextflow pipelines on SLURM HPC clusters for genomics surveillance work at GHRU-GSAR, where I built the bioinformatics pipeline for antimicrobial resistance surveillance. My current project, psyche-twin, is a concrete example of the kind of system I would bring to AIMS. It is a typed, multi-scale knowledge-graph architecture that fuses evidence streams from LLM-derived data, assessment instruments, behavioral logs, and documents into a single append-only event log. Disagreements between streams become explicit graph edges rather than being averaged away. A first-person conversational interface sits on top of the graph and generates responses grounded in its current state. Building this required me to design the data schema, stand up the Supabase/Postgres backend, write the ingestion and fusion logic, and operate the full production stack. It is a working research system that I maintain alone. That is the profile AIMS needs. I do not just know how to configure a server or debug a pipeline. I know how to design infrastructure that serves a research question, how to keep it running under real workloads, and how to document it so other researchers can use it. I have done this across domains, from AMR genomics to drug-resistance prediction to brain-circuit simulation, and I have done it as an independent researcher with no institutional IT department behind me. I am applying for this internship because AIMS is the institution in Africa that most directly supports the kind of computational mathematics that my work depends on. My TOPOLOGIX project, which predicts drug-resistance mutations from protein language model embeddings and drug fingerprints, achieves an AUROC of 0.804 on the Platinum benchmark and covers 100 percent of mutations where structure-based tools like mCSM-lig cover only 18 percent. That work is computational through and through, and it is the kind of research that AIMS exists to foster. I want to contribute to that mission by keeping the research infrastructure running, and I want to learn from the AIMS community while I do it. I am available to start immediately and can commit to the full internship period. I am based in Nigeria and Germany, and I am comfortable working remotely or on site depending on the centre's needs.
